NORMAN & MEDIEVAL HELMETS

Pig Faced Bascinet

All our Norman and Medieval helmets are hand-made in Europe from 16-gauge (1.5mm) or thicker steel using traditional hammer and anvil. They are designed to withstand a full-contact blow from a blunt re-enactment (steel) sword, but it is sensible to wear padding (e.g. a thick felt cap) to avoid the possibility of concussion. Each comes complete with an adjustable leather chinstrap.

The bowl of the helmet is hammered into shape by hand in two pieces with an invisible weld. Finishing is by wire brush to give a lustrous sheen.

Making a made to measure helmet is a fine art and it is important that you supply us with measurements accurate to within 1/8 inch (3mm). Measurements can be supplied in inches or centimetres.

* To measure the length and width of your head it is recommened that you make cardboard calipers to get accurate measurements. Failing this you can do the following:

Length: Place the back of your head against the wall and hold a book vertically against your forehead. Then get someone to measure the distance between the book and the wall.

Width: Hold a book vertically at each side of your head and get someone to measure the distance between the two books at forehead level. To make sure that you are holding the books straight you should measure both from the front and from the back ensuring that the two measurements match.
